By my life, war’s millstone has indeed ground down—after
By my life, the mill of war ground on after
it had earlier scattered Luʾayy east and west—
It had sent up sparks east and west.
بَقِيَّةَthe remnant of آلِthe house of الكاهِنَينِthe two priests وَعِزَّهاand its might
فَعادَso it became ذَليلاًhumbled بَعدَماafter كانَit had been أَغلَباdominant
the remnant of the two priests’ house and its might;
It left the rest of the priestly house and their glory
so it became humbled after once being dominant.
Humiliated, after they had been victorious.
فَطاحَso fell سَلامٌSalām وَاِبنُand the son of سَعيَةَSaʿya عَنوَةًby force
وَقيدَand was led ذَليلاًhumbled لِلمَناياto death اِبنُthe son of أَخطَباAkhṭab
So Salām and Ibn Saʿya were brought down by force,
Salam and the son of Sufyan fell in battle
and Ibn Akhṭab was led, humbled, to death.
And the son of Akhtab was bound a captive to death.
وَأَجلَبَand he mustered forces يَبغيseeking العِزَّhonor وَالذُلَّand humiliation يَبتَغيhe seeks
خِلافُthe opposite of يَدَيهِhis two hands ماwhat جَنىhe reaped حينَwhen أَجلَباhe mustered forces
And he mustered forces seeking honor, yet pursued humiliation;
He who had sought glory, now sought humiliation,
what he reaped when he mustered was contrary to his hands’ aim.
The opposite of what he had obtained when he sought glory.
كَتارِكِlike one forsaking سَهلِthe level part of الأَرضِthe land وَالحَزنُand rugged terrain هَمُّهُhis concern
وَقَدand indeed كانَwas ذاthis فيamong الناسِpeople أَكدىmore fruitless وَأَصعَباand more difficult
Like one forsaking level ground, intent on rugged terrain;
Like one who abandons the flat ground and walks uphill,
and this was, among men, the more fruitless and difficult course.
Though he had been the strongest and most stubborn among men.
وَشَأسٌand Shaʾs وَعَزّالٌand ʿAzzāl وَقَدand indeed صَلِياboth were scorched بِهاby it
وَماand not غُيِّباboth were kept away عَنfrom ذاكَthat فيمَنamong those who تَغَيَّباwent into hiding
And Shaʾs and ʿAzzāl had both been scorched by it,
And Shammas and 'Izzal had prayed in it
nor were they kept from that among those who went into hiding.
And had not been absent from it when others were absent.
وَعَوفُand ʿAwf بنُson of سَلمىSalmā وَاِبنُand the son of عَوفٍʿAwf كِلاهُماboth of them
وَكَعبٌand Kaʿb رَئيسُchief of القَومِthe people حانَmet doom وَخُيِّباand was thwarted
And ʿAwf ibn Salmā and Ibn ʿAwf, both of them,
And 'Auf ibn Salma and the son of 'Awf, both of them
and Kaʿb, the people’s chief, met doom and were thwarted.
And Ka'b, the leader of the people - the war destroyed them.
فَبُعداًso banishment وَسُحقاًand utter banishment لِلنَضيرِupon al-Naḍīr وَمِثلُهاand their like
إِنُif اُعقِبَwas made to follow فَتحٌa victory أَوor إِنِif اللَهُGod أَعقَباcaused to follow
So away with al-Naḍīr, far away—and with their like,
So curse its ruins and similarly curse it!
if a victory follows, or if God causes one to follow.
If a conquest follows or if Allah follows it!
