They greeted, and thus revived a lover,

Revive with it a languishing lover

Wasted away, his heart sick with longing.

Whose heart is wearied, pour into him drink

أجرى الهوى دمعه صبيبا

دما على نأيهم وصبه

Love made his tears flow in torrents—

Passion shed a tear, a stream

As blood over their distance—and poured them forth.

Blood, from their distance, poured into him

وأضرم الوجد بالتجافي

وأضرم الوجد بالتجافي

في القلب جمر الأسى وشبه

في القلب جمر الأسى وشبه

And yearning, through estrangement, kindled

And kindled longing with estrangement

The embers of sorrow in his heart and set them ablaze.

In the heart embers of grief and its flames

نار بذات الضلوع شبت

نار بذات الضلوع شبت

وأصل نار الغرام شبه

وأصل نار الغرام شبه

A fire flared within his ribs,

A fire ignited in the ribs

And the source of passion’s fire is a young woman.
