إذا ما الليل أظلم كابدوه

فيسفر عنهم وهم ركوع

Whenever night grows dark, they struggle through it;

Then it gives way to dawn while they bow in prayer.

أطار الخوف نومهم فقاموا

وأهل الأمن في الدنيا هجوع

Fear drove their sleep away, so they arose,

While those secure in this world lie sleeping.

لهم تحت الظلام وهم سجود

أنين منه تنفرج الضلوع

Beneath the darkness, while they are prostrate, theirs is

A groaning that makes their ribs spread apart.

وخرس بالنهار لطول صمت

عليهم من سكينتهم خشوع

And by day they are mute from prolonged silence;

A humble reverence born of their tranquility rests upon them.
