    And I have companions whose talk I never tire of:

    Wise and trustworthy, in absence and in presence.

    Whenever we gather, the beauty of their talk is

    A firm aid in driving cares away.

    From their knowledge they give me knowledge of the past,

    And wisdom, refinement, and sound judgment.

    ولا أتّقي منهم لساناً ولا يدا

    With no apprehension to dread, nor harm from a stumble;

    Nor do I guard against a tongue or hand of theirs.

    وإن قلتَ أمواتٌ فلستَ مُفَنّدا

    So if you say, 'They are alive,' you are no liar;

    And if you say, 'They are dead,' you cannot be refuted.
