أَلاwill you not تَزَعُrestrain القَلبَthe heart عَنfrom جَهلِهِits folly
وَعَمّاand from what تُؤَنَّبُyou are reproached مِنfor أَجلِهِits sake
Will you not restrain the heart from its folly,
Do not let your heart persist in ignorance
And from that for which you are reproached?
Nor in that for which you are to be blamed
يَهيمُis madly in love بِجُملٍwith Juml وَماand not إِنemphasizes the negation يَرىit sees
لَهُfor it مِنany سَبيلٍpath إِلىto جُملِهِits Juml
It pines for Juml, yet sees no
It wanders aimlessly, unable to see
Path for itself to its Juml.
A path to what it seeks
كَأَنas though لَمnot يَكُنthere had been عاشِقٌa lover قَبلَهُbefore it
وَقَدand indeed عَشِقَhave loved الناسُpeople مِنfrom قَبلِهِbefore it
As though no lover had existed before it,
As if before him was never a lover
Though people had loved before it.
When people have loved before
فَمِنهُمso among them مَنِthose whom الحُبُّlove أَودىbrought death بِهِupon him
وَمِنهُمand among them مَنَthose who اَشفىcame to the brink عَلىof قَتلِهِtheir being killed
For some of them, love brought death,
Some whom love has destroyed
And others came to the brink of being killed.
Others who were healed by killing it
فَأُبدِلَso it was given in exchange بَعدَafter الصِباyouthful passion حُلمَهُits wisdom
وَأَقصَرُand desisted ذوthe possessor of العَدلِjustice عَنfrom عَدلِهِhis justice
So after youthful passion, it was given wisdom in exchange,
So after youth comes wisdom
And the just man ceased his just dealing.
And justice falls short of justice
فَلاso do not تَركَبَنَّever commit الصَنيعَthe deed الَّذيwhich
تَلومُyou blame أَخاكَyour brother عَلىfor مِثلِهِits like
So never commit the deed
Do not do what you blame your brother for
For the like of which you blame your brother.
Nor let a man's words impress you
وَلاand do not يُعجِبَنَّكَlet impress you قَولُthe words of اِمرِئٍa man
يُخالِفُhe contradicts ماwhat قالَhe said فيin فِعلِهِhis conduct
And never admire the words of a man
If they contradict his actions
Who contradicts in deed what he has said.
Do not follow what your eyes cannot attain
وَلاand do not تُتبِعِmake follow الطَرفَthe gaze ماwhat لاnot تَنالُyou attain
وَلَكِنand yet سَلِask اللَهَGod مِنfrom فَضلِهِHis bounty
And do not let your gaze follow what you cannot attain,
But ask God for His abundance
But ask God for His bounty.
For how many poor gain riches
فَكَمfor many مِنa مُقِلٍّperson of little means يَنالُattains الغِنىwealth
وَيُحمَدُand is praised فيin رِزقِهِhis livelihood كُلِّهِall of it
For many a person of little means attains wealth,
And are praised for their full livelihood
And is praised in all his livelihood.
