How can he be a brother, or a man of loyalty—
How can he be a brother or one who keeps faith—
How can one be a brother or one of moral character
one whose actions out of sight leave you apprehensive and afraid?
one you fear when he is out of sight?
When you are suspicious of him in his absence, alarmed and anxious,
إِذاwhen تَغَيَّبتَyou are absent لَمnot تَبرَحcease تَظُنُّyou think بِهِof him
ظَنّاًsuspicion وَتَسأَلُand you ask عَمّاabout what قالَhe said أَوor فَعَلاhe did
Whenever you are absent, you never cease suspecting him,
When you are away, you never stop thinking of him
If you are away from him you continue to doubt him
harboring doubts and asking what he said or did.
with suspicion, and asking what he said or did.
With suspicion, and ask about what he said or did,
يُريhe shows الصَديقَthe friend لَهُof his مِنهُfrom himself مُكاشَرَةًa cordial smile
كَيماso that يَصولَhe may attack بِهِagainst him يَوماًone day إِذاwhen غَفَلاhe is off guard
He shows his friend a tooth-baring smile
He shows his friend a cordial smile,
He shows intimacy towards a friend of his
so that one day he may attack him when he is off guard.
so that he may attack him one day when he is off guard.
So that one day when he is unawares, he may attack him,
فَلاso neither عَداوَتُهُhis enmity تَبدوshows itself فَتَعرِفُهاso you recognize it
مِنهُfrom him وَلاnor وُدُّهُhis affection يَوماًever لَهُtoward him اِعتَدَلاwas true
Thus his enmity never shows itself for you to recognize,
So his enmity does not show itself for you to recognize it
His enmity does not appear for you to recognize it,
nor is his affection for him ever true and even.
in him, nor has his affection toward him ever been true.
Nor does his love for you ever become balanced.
