O singer in the bān tree, what saddened you has saddened us.

Indeed, the one who gave you longing to drink gave us

a cup brimming with bitter sap and pain.

Who will bring me a cup for which I have thirsted?

A cup of union—whoever sipped it became

serene of eye, intoxicated by the one he loves.

If I forget, I shall not forget the day I said, 'O my hope,

when will you grant me union?' You said to me, 'Now.'

Passion gave me drink from its burning lips,

yet I did not quench my thirst, and my heart grew drunk.

When we had finished, with love's phantom the third among us,

and the full moon's eyes watching over us from on high,

we wandered through boundless horizons of love,

and longing instilled in us tender concern and affection.

Union made me forget what I had endured in my life,

    in bygone days—pain and abandonment.

O source of purity, O origin of beauty—indeed,

I hope that time will bring back what once was.

Do not listen to the one who has said, 'He betrayed you.'

For his words contain falsehood and slander.

Whatever lies he invents, I have not ceased to love you.

And how can love's time be forgotten, since it first began?

And it remains my soul's hope and its desire,

and a heart, whoever it loves, ends up sorrowful.
