Neither rejection grieves me nor meeting you brings me joy.
Neither sadness afflicts me, nor does seeing you brings me joy,
For I am not as you once knew me.
For I am no longer as I used to be when you knew me.

So neither do the warbling nightingales captivate me
Neither do warbling birds in the rising light,

Nor does separation's grief destroy me.

For I have forgotten the sweetest of days,
Just as I've forgotten the sighs that tortured me.
just as I have made myself forget the sighs that torment me.

I have forgotten the love and resentment that once were;
Preoccupied by the aspirations of my homeland.
my homeland's aspirations have drawn me away from them!

My soul is its ransom, if sacrifice is spoken of.
For in its glory, misery brings me joy.
Indeed, suffering for whatever exalts it brings me joy.

My soul shall never know despair, and youth is a hand
My soul shall not know despair while youth's hand,

Supports me when the days try to subdue me.

وليس في الجهل الا فادح المحن
So, sons of my homeland, your happiness lies in knowledge,
Oh children of my homeland, your fortune is in knowledge,
and ignorance holds nothing but grievous ordeals.
While in ignorance lies only dreadful tribulation.

So make the West aware of the East's benefactions.
So learn from the West whatever gifts it has,
Drive the misguided from the homelands, and shun
And keep agitators from our homelands, shun dissension and upheaval.
