I endure what I endure of your torment,

And love for you endures in my heart's recesses.

And you go to extremes in rejection and unjust reproach,

And I go to extremes in my anguish and longing.

And if your heart knew what I suffer,

And what I endure of the pain of parting,

You would not have persisted in this coldness,

Nor would you have belittled my shed tears.

But I hid from you the horror of what ails me,

And fortitude remains part of my nature.

So if the reproachers claim I have ceased to pine,

Then all their talk is sheer fabrication.

And I show them nothing but resignation,

Even though my ribs are burning.

And how often they thought my rein quite slack,

Yet my heart is held fast in tight bonds.

And I fear being called one struck down by longing,

Who endures in love what he endures.

And I drown my despair in the darkness of night,

So I drown in my morning and evening draughts.

And I take a sweet first draught from your memory's dusky lips,

I drink of it again, with the illusion of your favor as cupbearer.

And imagination spreads shades of companionship for me,

I live within them until the day we meet.

I implore you not to aid my sickness against me,

As you aid the tears against my eyes' inner corners.
