Do you remember how we both said farewell with a handshake,

In which you placed your noble-born right hand?

Or do you remember our standing together in the valley of Wajj,

While your eyes poured purity upon us?

And when a songbird sang upon the branches

The song of love in its weeping refrain?

You are life to a deeply dejected heart,

And none but you can gladden it through union.

What harm would it do you if you granted my wish,

So the heart might rejoice in its longing to see you?

For in you the heart's passions are gathered,

And in meeting you lies the lamenting poet's world.

    أستلهمُ الشِّعرَ من باهي مُحيِاكِ

    My utmost wish is that you appear smiling;

I draw poetic inspiration from your radiant face.

My world is a scorching fire of estrangement

When you go far away, and a garden when I meet you.

So if you have forgotten the love that once bound us

In chastity, my heart does not forget you.

And memories, when your nearness is beyond my reach,

Are solace for a heart that loves you through the days.
