O slender-figured one, O you who grew bewildered when asked,

How wondrous is one who has risen in beauty and reached perfection!

You made me drink from cups of patience that I sip,

And I stay awake through the night, lamenting longing and dread.

My thoughts of you are wandering, bewildered,

Debating despair and hope within my eyes.

My soul is enchanted by your favor, in rapture,

While my heart complains of all that abandonment has wrought.

    الحب بالعز يَسْمُو رائعاً جذلا

    I spurn my love if its dignity is humbled;

Love rises through honor, splendid and exultant.

How many kisses you made me drink from the wine of your mouth,

Until I grew drunk on what you poured for me.

    فاسأل ، دموعي أَجَابَتْ كُلِّ مَنْ سَألا

    My hopes vanish when you are absent, O my moon;

Ask my tears—they have answered everyone who asked.

If only my eyes had never looked into yours,

And if only I had not touched your bashful cheek.

If only I were without a heart that torments me,

O you who shot me with an arrow from it and departed.

I wander lovesick, and the moonlit night asks me:

Who barred the doors and pathways before you?

No night but carries me toward your memory,

A phantom passing swiftly through its gardens.

Love, in the springtime of life, once kept us company,

Giving the two hearts honey to drink from its cups.

How often we swore that love would remain forever,

And stay joined throughout the days.

I never knew that in its graveyards

I had buried my life—or that the beloved had forgotten.

I never sought healing, yet it was my fate!

And can a young man repel what is decreed when it descends?
