O breath of love, bring back what was carried away

by the hand of nights from the dream of our past.

In the days when passion and love were our pasture,

and the loveliest songs were among those we sang.

We would wake with the birds, the dewdrops gleaming

upon the blossoms—we watered them, and they watered us.

O rose, like dawn's smile, you revive us

with the morning, and give to us and enrich us.

O sweet, rapturous breeze, you greet us at dawn

with fragrance that envelops us, and song that moves us.

Those wishes whose fulfillment was so elusive

passed swiftly, and no longer come our way!

Calamity ravages them among all it has ravaged, and they have changed,

forever hurting us with sorrow and making us weep.

Where is what once united us through hopes,

as we desired, enriching us and giving us life?

Time is miserly indeed; it does not make us happy,

nor wipe away the tears in the corners of our eyes!

How beautiful she was when she appeared to me! I imagined her

a tender branch, sweet basil, and a wild rose.

I remembered her from the days when love made us happy,

and the spreading trees embraced us, and the dew gave us drink.

What ails her today, that she no longer hastens to us?

Though she was the one who accustomed us to her coming to meet us!

How much the nightingales sang of her charms,

and how many songs for us revived our wishes!

How often the spreading trees embraced us in love, and hid us

from the eyes that used to be hostile to us.

And how often we stayed awake, the stars of night watching us

with longing, and leaning tenderly over us or whispering to us.

And the breeze flowed through our gatherings,

and fragrance drifted through our nights.

What ails her today? The days of serenity have passed,

and what once enriched us has vanished from us!

So there are no flocks of birds in our dwellings,

nor does perfume's scent waft through our valley.

O memories of our love—whenever they pass,

they stir tears, and the corners of our eyes grow wet!
