it woke the desert within the lover, and he sang.

It spread its plumage in greeting, then began

a line of love's alphabet; then we wrote.

Thaqafi in stature, Arji in speech,

it sings: 'How many a youth among us we have lost!'

with desire, and Wajj trembled and swayed.

for a maiden's proud beauty is riper for plucking.'

From yesterday's reel, a memory took shape,

as bars assemble themselves into a prison:

when the wolves of night prowled through my blood,

and morning laughed with spite amid the cactus,

and death's spears grew in my hand

like my grape-clusters, while terror was a wine jar.

From the clock of destinies there came to me

an hour that fashioned the grass's letters into safety.

ceased for a day to turn matrons into tender beauties.

It is the hour of my love: it shone,

and dawned auspiciously from history's hand.

That is my promise, my first knight, who

shielded my flesh from the thicket's wolves by night.

O deserts, take my lung for shade,

and drink your fill of my cheeks' dew, freely bestowed.

When she spoke, the face of night was an expanse

painting light into lighthouses and ships.

Her words were pomegranates that clothed

dawn's lip in glad tidings and good fortune.

    Fayfa's sister—her heart is within my heart;

who has seen two hearts in one tormented heart?

This is Fayfa, who has journeyed north within us—

what garden among God's gardens is more radiant!

Or is she Taif? A dreaming breast,

and drowsy turtledoves now starting awake.

This is Tayfa, a well-built house of verse,

that was within our eyes—gone into hiding?

Who will bring back the street, the shop, to me

just as they were, if ever the child yearns?

while the painter, the artist, lives as art.

    How, then, can al-Ma'arri complain,

in one lament: 'The soul has grown barren and withered'?

    It is love, fire's embryo—alas

for one whom the embers' nipple has suckled with groans!

And it is love: lamps seen

in lovers' blood, whenever and wherever.

My love for you is but a tender union,

and love's heart is frailty embracing frailty.
