    Our course is beyond the endurance of endurance,

    beyond the patience of patience—yet no surrender.

    We seethe; we weep for those who fell,

    yet we press on to complete the course.

    Our blood pours down upon our strings,

    and we sing to hopes with passion.

    Bitter are our sorrows, yet they are—

    O agony of patience—the sorrows of men.

    We swallow stones and bleed, yet

    we play our longings and sing to beauty.

    We bury loved ones and grieve, yet

    we defy, wearing the face of the impossible as shoes.

    Since we began the course, we have made jewels of pebbles

    with precious blood, and made the sands a paradise.

    And where to? We know the starting point,

    and the distances, as we know, are long.

    And like April, we sped among the heights,

    spilling fragrance to right and left.

    We build for the longed-for Yemen, from

    our sleeplessness, a bridge, and call to it: Come!

    شجراً مِلءَ المَدى أعيْا الزَّوالْ

    And we took root beneath the rains of annihilation,

    as trees filling the expanse, thwarting extinction;

    trees embracing the depths of the earth

    and lending the wind the fringes of shade.

    And we blazed with love in the earth's womb,

    and became fields and hills,

    apricots, coffee, roses, and dew,

    and spring, and summer, and harvests.

    We are this earth; within it we blaze,

    and within us it is vigor and strife.

    من رُبا أعظُمِنا هذي الجبالْ

    From the knolls of our flesh come these hills;

    from the hills of our bones, these mountains.

    قد عشقناهُ وأضنانا وِصالْ

    This is not the beginning of our encounters with death;

    we have loved it, and union has worn us down.

    And it chose its turban from our blood,

    and we made its fiery face our sandals.

    مَسَّنا قَتْلاَ.. ودُسناهُ قِتالْ

    We know the death that knows us;

    it touched us with slaughter, and we trampled it in battle.

    أَكَلَتْ مِنّا، أَكَلناها نِضالْ

    And we plunged unbowed into calamities;

    they devoured some of us; we devoured them in struggle.

    إنَّ بعضَ النَّقصِ روحُ الاكتمالْ

    The death of some of the people gives life to them all;

    indeed, some loss is the soul of wholeness.

    Here some of the stars have gone out

    so that the other stars may blaze more brightly.

    Trees lose some of their branches,

    then grow greener and more luxuriant.

    But, O Death, do you know when

    you will lie back on a bed of tedium?

    Within our hearts is a question, with no

    one to answer it, as it seethes without cease:

    and why do our loved ones go out

    before the wicks have used up the oil?

    Then we forget sorrow through sorrow; and who—

    alas for the answer lost—will make us forget the question?
