O silence, how tender you would be, if you could
O silence, how I wish you could
enfold me—or if I could.
Wrap me, or that I could

But something inside me blazes,
But something inside me seethes
so snow throbs, and spring thirsts.
So the snow flutters, and spring smolders

It weeps, sings, begs for a listener,
It cries, sings, rants listening
and it is the singer, the echo, and the hearer.
It’s the singer, the echo, the hearer

It raves, so night kneels within my ribs.
It raves so night crouches in my ribs
It scorches for a watch of night, or a watch draws blood.
Scorching decrepit, or bleeding the frail

And meteors cook the ashes of midmorning,
The stars cook dawn’s ashes
and the wind grinds the evenings of frost.
And the wind grinds the frost of dusk

And dawn pants like a forsaken woman
And morning pants like an abandoned woman
whose breasts are ravaged by her bedfellow's phantom.
Whose dreams invade her breasts

Something coos inside me, yearns,
Something murmurs, inside me craves
cries out, resounds like a dreadful throng.
It shrieks, it moans, like a monstrous din

It calls as a prophet calls, without
It calls, like a prophet in a trance
awareness, and is dragged along like a libertine.
And drags like a debauched man

So a youth seethes behind my withering,
So a lad lurks behind my bloom
and an old man begs, and an infant weeps.
And an old man rants, and an infant weeps

It hungers until summer forgets the dew's
It starves until summer forgets
appointed time; the gasp of blood pours down.
Its tryst, and the sleeper's sigh swoops

And the valley dashes, the hills teem
and the pasture flees, and the flock grows weary.
The pasture flees, and the flock bleats

Throbbing, heedless obeying or not?

It sings so the nights of youth
as a stubborn dawn, or a gentle late afternoon.
Return to defiant dawn, or gentle calm

And phantoms grow pregnant, reaping visions,
Visions reap dreams, the unborn lives
and the future is born, and the fallen comes to life.
And the dead awakens, the ruined thrives

So scattered fragments begin in my letters:
So the fragments begin in my letters
a joyous birth and a painful pregnancy.
A joyous birth, a burden, and pain

These letters, lost in the expanse—
These aimless, endless letters
I squandered my life in them, so they would not be lost.
Wherein my life was lost, lest it be lost

And in what I have undertaken, I am no merchant
And I’m not among what I came

A merchant, though I feel, I see, I sell
