Like radiance returning to a blind man's eyes,

    Suddenly, like a parched bier turning green;

And as life stretched out her hands

    To a drowning man on the brink of death;

And as there returns to an old man's heartbeat

The vigor of unfettered, nimble youth—

She returned suddenly, like an only child's return

After uncertainty, to his anguished father.

She struggled along her path toward the joyful return,

And bloodied the course of the noble struggle.

She stared: whom does she see, and whom is she calling?

Where is she going—to the terrifying void?

And the stirrings of terror showed her a face,

Barbarous as a massive prison door,

And trunks with faces and chins,

And the lowered head of a stall-fed donkey.

Then misgivings called to one another within her, and she listened

To the faint echo and the illusion of that faint sound.

And as upon the ear's unease there falls

A hush after the violent clamor,

She let a glance wander, and something met her gaze,

Like the nod of a feeble lamp.

It was giving its life to the bewildered,

And on its face was a sorrowful one's apology.

Then she sensed a broken living being there,

    Writhing beneath the biting winter:

Villages that sold their lives over the pettiest

    Quarrels and foolish babble.

And their holes craned toward the wind,

Asking after the scent of a loaf.

So she drew near, looking at life upon them:

    Remnants of paltry flotsam.

    جمدت حولها بقايا النزيف

    And the vines there were the torn limbs of the slain;

Remnants of bleeding had congealed around them.

And she appeared as a mother, in whom had grown wrinkled

    Summer's sweat and autumn's trembling.

She asked her about her name, and there emerged

From her furrows, a companion's tenderness.

And she turned, recounting that her father

Was from Zabid, and her mother from Thaqif.

So she restored spring to her, and she swayed

In two youths: one old, one new.

She alighted as tenderness's guest, and [was]

To the dwellings of loss, the most generous host.

She alighted amid processions of sunrise

    And throngs of fluttering greenness,

Within a frame of the sparrows' waiting

And of the blind morning's longing.

And she glided over the hills, and there flared

In the veins of snow, the warmth of summer.

And she deftly fashioned faces from the void

    And foreheads from towering pride.

She returned, and the coffins' yellow pallor turned

Into the greenness of luxuriant youth.
