يدبّhe creeps علىon ظهرthe back of الطريقthe road وand يجتديhe begs
I passed an old man, yellow of mind and hand.
I passed by an old man, feeble in mind and hand
He creeps along the back of the road and begs.
Crawling on the road, begging piteously
ثقيلheavy الخطىthe steps يمشيhe walks الهوينىslowly بجوعهwith his hunger
واحزانهand his sorrows مشيthe gait of الضريرthe blind man المقيّدshackled
Heavy of step, he walks slowly with his hunger
With heavy steps he walked, famished, downcast
And his sorrows, as a shackled blind man walks.
The walk of a blind man, shackled helplessly
وand يمضيhe goes on وand لاnot يدريhe knows إلىto أينwhere ينتهيhe ends up
وand لمdid not يدرknow قبلbefore السيرwalking منfrom أينwhere يبتديhe begins
And he goes on, not knowing where he will end,
He went on, not knowing where his path would end
And before setting out he did not know where to begin.
Nor from whence he had begun this odyssey
وand يزجيhe sends forth إلىto الأسماعthe ears صوتاa voice مجرّحاwounded
كئيباmournful كأحلامlike the dreams of الغريبthe stranger المشرّدdisplaced
And he sends a wounded voice to listening ears,
To ears he called out in a voice full of pain
Mournful as the dreams of a displaced stranger.
Sad like an exile's dreams, lost and lonely
يمدّhe stretches out اليدthe hand الصفراyellow إلىtoward كلّevery عابرpasserby
وand لمdid not يجنreap إلاّexcept اليأسdespair منfrom مدّةthe stretching out of اليدthe hand
He stretches his yellow hand toward every passerby,
His withered hand he held out to each passerby
And has reaped only despair from stretching out his hand.
But reaped only despair through the years steadfastly
فيلقيso he drops علىonto الكفّthe palm النحيلthin جبينهhis forehead
وand يسألhe asks هلwhether فيon الأرضthe earth ظلّa shadow لمسعدof a benefactor
So he drops his forehead onto his thin palm,
On his frail palm he lays his forehead
And asks, "Is there on earth the shadow of a benefactor?"
Asking, is there no shade of luck left for me?
هوit is الشرّevil ملءfilling الأرضthe earth وand الشرevil طبعهاits nature
هوit is اشرevil (likely الشر) ملءfilling الأمسyesterday وand اليومtoday وand الغدtomorrow
It is evil that fills the earth, and evil is its nature;
Evil fills the earth and is its nature
It is evil that fills yesterday, today, and tomorrow.
The worst filled the past, today and tomorrow will see
وهذاand this غبارdust الأرضthe earth آهاتsighs خيّبdisappointed people
وand هذاthis الحصىthe pebbles حبذاتbeads (likely حبات) دمعtears مجمّدfrozen
And this dust of the earth is the sighs of the disappointed,
This dust of earth is sighs of the disappointed
And these pebbles are beads of frozen tears.
These pebbles are teardrops frozen steadfastly
رمىhe cast الشيخthe old man فيماat what حولهaround him نظرةa glance الأسىsorrow
ومرّand he passed by كطيفlike the phantom of المستكينthe abject one المهدّدthreatened
The old man cast a sorrowful glance at what was around him,
The old man cast a look of sorrow around
And passed by like the phantom of one abject and threatened.
And passed like the ghost of one threatened plaintively
فياso, alas للفقيرfor the poor man الشيخthe old man يمشيhe walks علىon الطّوىhunger
وand فيin مأتمa mourning gathering الشكوىlament يروحhe goes out in the evening وand يغتديhe goes out in the morning
Alas for the poor old man, walking hungry,
Oh what a pitiful old man walking the hills
And in lament's mourning gathering he goes out, evening and morning.
Lamenting as he wanders ceaselessly
يظنّhe thinks أكفّpalms الناسthe people تهويdescend بجودهاwith their generosity
إليهtoward him وand لمdid not يبصرsee سوىexcept وهمهhis delusion الرديwretched
He imagines people's palms descending with their bounty
He thinks people's palms will rain generosity on him
Toward him, yet he has seen only his wretched delusion.
Not seeing that it's just his foolish reverie
وand جوعhunger يلوّيtwists نفسهitself فيwithin ضلوعةhis ribs (likely ضلوعه)
فينساقso he is driven along لاnot يدريhe knows إلىto أينwhere يهتديhe finds his way .
And hunger twists itself within his ribs,
And hunger coils inside his ribs
So he is driven along, not knowing where to find his way.
So he drifts not knowing where he will find sanctuary
