I am in pain. From what am I suffering?

The question was bewildered, and the questioner bowed his head.

What do I feel? Ah, my sorrow—some of it

laments, so I recognize it; another part is obscure.

Within me is what I have known of bleeding sorrow, and within me

is a burning in the depths that I do not know.

Within me are soul-wounds I know, and within me

are many times more than I know or imagine.

And it is as though my soul were a mad flame,

raging and setting me ablaze with its own fire.

    أمشي بها وحدي وكلي مأتم

    And it is as though my heart within my ribs were a funeral bier;

I walk with it alone, and my whole being is a gathering of mourners.

    فكأنها في كل جارحة فم

    I weep, and the wounds smile at my weeping;

as though they were a mouth in every limb.

Oh, the wound's smile! How much I weep, and how much

blood flows over its red lips!

Forever I walk upon wounds, and end up

where I began—so where is the end for me?

And I wrestle with the world and love its serenity,

but as a mute man longs for speech.

And I bless Mother Life, because she is

my mother, and my share of her fruit is bitter colocynth.

My deprivation is deprivation itself, except that I

rave with a passion for life and dream.

And if the reality of a man's ill fortune makes him wretched

through injustice, comforting imagination makes him happy.

Alone I live on cares, and my solitude

is filled with despair, and so is the air around me.

Yet I love cares, because they are

thoughts whose silence I interpret and translate.

I love life with its good and its evil,

and I love life's children and have compassion for them.

And I fashion “The Philosophy of Wounds” into songs:

the carefree sing them, and the afflicted are moved to sorrow.
