هَهُناhere فيin المنزلthe house العاريbare الجديبْbarren
أحتسيI sip الدَمعَtears وأقتاتُand I feed on النَحيبْsobbing
Here in the bare, barren house,
I sip the tears and feed on sobbing
I sip tears and feed on sobbing.
I complain, while the night is filled with fearful silence
هَهُناhere أشكوI lament إلىto اللَيلِthe night وكمْand how often
أشتكيI lament واللَيلُand the night فيin الصَمتِsilence الرهيبdreadful
Here I lament to the night—and how often
And I express the sorrows of passion in poetry
I lament, while the night is in dreadful silence.
I call out to the night, and the silence answers back
وأبثُand I confide to الشعرَpoetry آلامَpains الهوىlove
وأناديand I call to اللَيلَthe night والصًمتُand silence يجيبْanswers
And I confide to poetry the pains of love,
So to whom can I vent my complaints? To
And I call to the night, and silence answers.
which hearing can I send this sad melody?
فإلىso to منْwhom أنفثُI breathe out الشكوىthe complaint؟ إلىto
أيًwhich سمعِear أبعثُI send اللحنthe melody الكئيبْmournful؟
So to whom do I breathe out my complaint? To
And to whom can I complain of love? To
Which ear do I send the mournful melody?
whom? To whom? I am alone, a stranger
وإلىand to منwhom أشكيI complain of الحبًlove إلىto
إننيindeed I وحديon my own غريبْa stranger
And to whom do I complain of love? To
burns within my ribs like flames upon flames
Whom—to whom? Indeed, I am alone, a stranger.
And for whom can I sing? For whom can I sing? Oh
هَهُناhere ياO ليلُnight وحديon my own والجوىand heartache
بينbetween أضلاعيmy ribs لهيبٌa flame فيin لهيبْa flame
Here, O night, I am alone, and heartache
my crazy longing! For whom can I sing this elegy?
Between my ribs is flame within flame.
What is with my heart that love toyed with it
ولمنْand for whom أشدوI sing؟ ومنْand whom أشدوI sing of؟ فياso, oh
فيا
لجنونيat my madness منْwhom أغنًيI sing of بالنًسيبْin love verse
And for whom do I sing? And of whom do I sing? Oh,
like the storm toys with a tender branch?
My madness! Whom do I sing of in love verse?
For whom can I sing? No beloved? No -
ماwhat لقلبيwith my heart يعبَثُtoys الحبََlove بهwith it
عبثَthe toying of الإعصارِthe whirlwind بالغصنwith the bough ِالرطيبْtender
What ails my heart, that love toys with it
I have no share of anything in this world
As a whirlwind toys with a tender bough?
Oh! A poet, and poetry comes
منwhom أغنَيI sing of؟ لاno حبيباًa beloved؟ لاno ولاand no
ليfor me منof الدنياthis world علىon الدنياthis world نصيبْa share
Whom do I sing of? No beloved? No, nor
from my agony! Woe! How wretched is the literary man!
Have I any share of this world while living in it.

Ah, a poet—and poetry is part of
Where is my life? Where? In the near day.
My ordeal! Alas, how wretched the writer is!
