Are you asking who she is

whom I preferred, or where my longing lies?

And you repeat: “Are you not the one

who created my wakefulness and my radiance,

the shores of my eyes, the greenness

of my seasons, my warmth, my taste,

the garden of my face, the evenings

the confidences of lilies and roses

    to the delicate breezes.

    of beauty—or sweetest hypocrisy.

Will you return to me, weeping for my setting,

    or singing for my rising?”

    When I found closeness to

you more bitter than separation's sleepless nights,

I preferred the sorrow of distance from

you over the bitter pains of meeting.
