O You who held back the elephant’s plot from the valley of Mecca,
And You abound in bounties as You will,
أَرِحنيrelieve me مِنof اللائيthose who إِذاwhen حَلَّfalls due دينُهمtheir debt

Relieve me of those who, when the debt owed them falls due,
Walk through the courtyards with the gait of widows.
إِذاwhen دَخَلواthey enter قالواthey say السَلامُpeace عَلَيكُمupon you

When they enter, they say, “Peace be upon you,”
Yet through that greeting he seeks something other than peace.
أَلينُI yield إِذاwhen اِشتَدَّgrows stern الغَريمُthe creditor وَالتَوىand turns evasive
اذاwhen لانَhe softens حَتّىuntil يُدرِكَovertakes الدينَthe debt قابِليmy next year
I yield when the creditor grows stern, and turn evasive
When he softens, until my next year overtakes the debt.
عَرَضتُI made an offer عَلىto ذِئبٍa wolf لِيأخُذَso that he might take بعضsome of ماwhat

I made an offer to a wolf, that he might take some of what
He seeks, before pressing concerns intervene.
تَثاءَبَhe yawned حَتّىuntil قُلتُI said داسعُdisgorging نفسِهِhis own soul

He yawned until I said, “He is disgorging his very soul!”
And bared fangs of his like pickaxes.
