أَياO راكِباًrider أَمّاif عرضتyou happen to pass فَبلِّغَنthen convey
كَبيرَthe chief of بَنيthe sons of العَوّامِal-‘Awwam انif قيلit is asked مَنwhom تَعنىyou mean
O rider, if you happen to pass that way, convey this
to the chief of al-‘Awwam's sons, if asked whom you mean.
سَتَعلَمُyou will learn انif جالَتturns بِكَagainst you الحَربُwar جَولَةًa turn
إِذاwhen فَوَّقَnocked الرامونَthe archers أَسهُمُarrows مَنwhom تُغنيyou can help
You will learn, if war takes a turn against you,
when the archers nock their arrows, whom you can help.
فَأَصبَحتِso became الأَرحامُkinship ties حينَwhen وليتَهاyou took charge of them
بِكَفَّيكَin your two hands أَكراشاًpaunches تُجَرُّbeing dragged عَلىover دِمنِdung-heaps
So kinship ties became, when you took charge of them,
paunches in your two hands, dragged over dung-heaps.
عَقَدتُمyou pledged لِعَمروto ‘Amr عُقدَةًa binding covenant وَغَدَرتُمُand you acted treacherously
بِأَبيضَtoward a radiant man كالمِصباحِlike a lamp فيon لَيلَةِa night of الدَجنِcloud-darkness
You made a binding pledge to ‘Amr, and betrayed
a radiant man, like a lamp on a cloud-dark night.
وَكبَّلتَهُand you fettered him حَولاfor a year بِجودwith the yielding up بنفسِهِof his own life
تَنوءُweigh heavily بِهِon him فيon ساقِهِhis leg حَلَقُrings of اللَبنِthe fetters
And you fettered him for a year as he yielded up his life;
the fetter-rings on his leg weighed him down.
فَماyet did not قالَsay عَمروٌ‘Amr إِذwhile يَجودُhe yielded up بِنَفسِهِhis own life
لضاربِهِto his striker حَتّىuntil قَضىhe met نَحبَهُhis death دَعنيleave me be
Yet ‘Amr, while giving up his life, never said
to his striker, until he met his death, ‘Leave me be.’
تحدِّثُyou tell مَنwhoever لاقَيتَyou met أَنَّكَthat you are عائِذٌseeking refuge
وَصرَّعتَand you felled قَتلىslain men بَينَbetween زَمزمَZamzam وَالرُكنِand the Corner
You tell whoever you meet that you seek refuge,
yet you have laid men dead between Zamzam and the Corner.
جعلتمyou assigned لضربِto beating الظَهرِthe back منهof him عصيَّكُمyour sticks
تُراوِحُهstrike him in turn والأَصبحيَّةَand the Asbahi whips لِلبَطنِfor the belly
You set your sticks to strike his back,
striking him in turn, and Asbahi whips to strike his belly.
تُعذِّرُyou offer excuses منهconcerning him الآنَnow لَمّاafter قَتَلتَهُyou killed him
تَفاوَتَthe distance أَرجاءِthe sides of القليبِthe well مِنfrom الشَطنِthe well-rope
Now you offer excuses concerning him, after killing him—
as far off as a well's sides from its rope.
فَلَمso did not أَرَI see وَفداًa delegation كانَthat was للغَدرِfor treachery عاقِداًmaking a pledge
كَوَفدِكَlike your delegation شَدّواthey bound a pledge غَيرَone who is not موفٍtrue to his word وَلاnor مُسنيgenerous in giving
So I have never seen a delegation that pledged itself to treachery
like yours: they bound their pledge to one neither faithful nor generous.
وَكُنتَand you were كَذاتِlike a woman of الفِسقِwickedness لَمdid not تَدرِknow ماwhat حوتshe had gathered
تَخَيَّرُshe chooses between حاليهاher two courses أَتَسرُقُdoes she steal أَمor تَزنيfornicate
And you were like a sinful woman, not knowing what she had gained,
choosing between her two courses: should she steal or fornicate?
جَزىmay repay اللَهُGod عَنّيon my behalf خالِداًKhalid شَرَّthe worst of ماwhat جَزىHe repaid
وَعروةَand ‘Urwa شَرّاًthe worst مِنof خَليلٍa close friend ومنand of خِدنِan intimate companion
May God repay Khalid on my behalf with the worst repayment He ever gave,
and ‘Urwa too, the worst of friends and intimates.
لَعَمريby my life لَقَدindeed أَردىbrought to destruction عُبَيدَةُ‘Ubayda جارَهُhis neighbor
بِشَنعاءَwith a hideous deed عارٍof disgrace لاnot تُوارىbe concealed عَلىat الدَفنِburial
By my life, ‘Ubayda has indeed destroyed his neighbor
with a hideous disgrace that burial cannot conceal.
وَقَدand indeed كانَwas عمروٌ‘Amr قَبلَbefore أَنthat يَغدِرواthey acted treacherously بِهِtoward him
صَليبَstout القَناةِthe spear-shaft ماnot تَلينُit softens عَلىwith الدَهنِoil
And ‘Amr, before they betrayed him, had been
firm as a spear-shaft that would not soften with oil.
قَتَلتُمyou killed أَخاكُمyour brother بالسِياطِwith whips سَفاهَةًout of foolishness
فَيالَكَso, alas for you للرأيfor the judgment المُضَلَّلِmisguided والأَفنِand feeble-mindedness
You killed your brother with whips, out of foolishness;
oh, what misguided judgment and feeble wit!
فَلَوif only أَنَكُمthat you أَجهزتمُdelivered the finishing blow إِذwhen قَتَلتمُyou killed
وَلَكِنbut قَتَلتُمyou killed بِالسِياطِwith whips وَبالسِجنِand with imprisonment
If only you had finished him off when you killed him!
But you killed him with whips and imprisonment.
وانيand I indeed لأَرجوsurely hope أَنto أَرىsee فيكin you ماwhat تَرىyou behold
بِهِthrough it مِنof عِقابِpunishment اللَهِGod ماwhat دونَهُless than it يُغنيwould suffice
And I truly hope to see befall you what will show you
such punishment from God that less than it would suffice.
قَطَعتَyou severed مِنof الأَرحامَthe kinship ties ماwhat كانَwas واشِجاًclosely entwined
عَلىdespite الشَيبِgray hair وابتعتَand you bought المَخافَةَfear بالأَمنِwith safety
You severed the ties of kinship that had been closely entwined
despite your gray hair, and bought fear at the price of safety.
وَأَصبَحتَand you have become تَسعىadvancing قاسِطاًunjust بِكَتيبَةٍwith a war-band
تُهَدِّمُyou demolish ماwhat حَولَaround الحَطيمِal-Hatim وَلاand do not تَبنيbuild
And now you advance, unjustly, with a war-band,
demolishing what surrounds al-Hatim, not building.
فَلاso do not تَجزعَنever lament مِنover سُنَّةٍa practice قَدalready سَنَنتَهاyou established it
فَماfor there is no لِلدِماءِfor blood الدَهرَever تُهرَقُbeing shed مِنany حَقنِstaunching
So never lament a practice you yourself established,
for blood poured out has no staunching, ever.
