وَلّى وَحُسنُ حَديثِهِ لَم يُسأَمِ
May rain bless your phantom, a vision visiting by night.
A drink for your gentle spirit from a visiting apparition
It departed, though its lovely speech had not yet grown tiresome.
Who is gone, though the charm of his talk did not grow tiring

How did you find your way, though you are no hardy walker,
How did you find your way when you were no pathfinder?
to the night quarters of disheveled men, gaunt as spearheads?
To a night’s camp as prickly as hedgehogs bristling

The Emir was determined against them, so their night’s camp
are in the ranks nearest the enemy bearing battle insignia.
