كَأَنَّas though بَنيthe sons of أُمَيَّةَUmayya حَولَaround بِشرٍBishr
نُجومٌstars وَسطَهاin their midst قَمَرٌa moon مُنيرُradiant
It is as though the sons of Umayya around Bishr
The sons of Umayyah surround Bishr,
Were stars, with a radiant moon in their midst.
Stars around a shining moon.
هُوَhe الفَرعُthe scion المُقَدَّمُthe foremost مِنof قُرَيشٍQuraysh
إِذاwhen أَخذتtake مآخِذَهاtheir courses الأُمورُaffairs
He is the foremost scion of Quraysh
He is the foremost branch of Quraysh,
When affairs take their course.
When affairs are taken hold of.
لَقَدindeed عَمَّتreached everyone نَوافِلُهُhis gifts فَأَضحىso he became
غَنيّاًrich مِنthrough نَوافِلهِhis gifts الفَقيرُthe poor man
His gifts have indeed reached all, so now
His supererogatory acts have spread,
The poor man is rich through his gifts.
So the poor are enriched by his supererogatory acts.
جَبَرتَyou mended مَهيضَناour brokenness وَعدلتَand you dealt justly فيناamong us
فَعاشَso he lived البائِسُthe wretched one الكلُّthe helpless dependent الكَبرthe aged one
You mended our brokenness and dealt justly among us,
You have set right our crookedness and ruled justly over us,
So the wretched, helpless old man lived.
So the wretched and the mighty live.
فَأَنتَso you are الغَيثُthe rain قَدindeed عَلِمَتknows قُرَيشٌQuraysh
لَناfor us وَالواكِفُand the dripping one الجَونُthe dark one المَطيرُthe abundantly raining one
So you are the rain—as Quraysh well knows—
You are the rain, Quraysh knows,
For us, and the dark cloud dripping with abundant rain.
For us the bestower, the generous, the rain.
