O tongue of the Arabs, would you not

    Graciously bestow eloquence,

    Enchanting minds—yet

It is the magic of meanings.

And grant the heart a radiance

That shines forth from my tongue,

So that a light may illuminate the night,

Lo, as though it were two moons!

    So the nation beholds gladness

In the darkness of this age.

Teach me speech as a river,

    Watering the land of wishes,

Upholding the truth, making it plain,

    With words like pearls,

    Giving the oppressed a ship

    Cleaving the sea of humiliation.

Teach me the word as a spear,

    And close upon tyranny,

So it sees the word as terror,

While the weapon of violence is feeble.

    So it beholds fierce might

    From eloquence like a spearhead.

Teach me thought that is free

    And unbowed, not captive,

    So thought may roam, unclouded,

And as though I were in gardens,

    Choosing their sweetest fruit

    From beautiful little daughters.

I do not seek knowledge as mere words,

But as my soul and my being,

    And a life in bliss.

Oh, what bliss! It is imperishable.

Does the world behold any beauty

    Like the beauty in eloquence?
