إِلَيْكِto you هَدِيَّتِيmy gift وَقَلْبِيand my heart مُتَيَّمُlove-struck
مُنَاهُits wish يَكُونُهَاto be it وَمَاand has not زَالَceased يَحْلُمُit dreams
Here is my gift to you, and my heart is love-struck.
To you my gift, and my heart is lovelorn
Its wish is to be that gift, and it still dreams.
Its dwelling becomes it, and it still dreams
وَرُوحِيand my soul تَمَنَّىwished لَوْif only تَصِيرُit becomes هَدِيَّتِيmy gift
فَنَحْيَاso we may live بِرُوحَيْنَاwith our two souls مَعًاtogether نَتَنَعَّمُwe enjoy bliss
And my soul wished it could become my gift,
And my soul wished that my gift would become you
So we might live with our two souls, together enjoying bliss.
So we live with our two souls together delighted
وَلَوْand if أَنَّthat مِلْكِيmy possession ذِيthese الْبِحَارُthe seas بِدُرِّهَاwith their pearls
بَعَثْتُI sent إِلَيْكِto you الدُّرَّthe pearls وَهْيَwhile they تَبَسَّمُsmile
And if these seas, with their pearls, were mine,
And if my kingdom with its seas and pearls
I would send you the pearls as they smiled.
I would send you the pearls smiling
وَلَوْand if كُنْتُI were أُهْدِيكِI offer you الْبَسِيطَةَthe earth جَنَّةًa paradise
وَفَاحَتْand it exhaled fragrance بِمَاwith what فِيin الْقَلْبِthe heart كَادَتْit almost تَكَلَّمُspeaks
And if I offered you the earth as a paradise,
And if I gifted you an orchard vast
And it exhaled the fragrance of what the heart holds, it would almost speak.
Filled with all the heart contains, it would have spoken
وَلَوْand if كُنْتُI were أُعْطِيكِI give you النُّجُومَthe stars هَدِيَّةًa gift
وَصَارَتْand they became تُبَاهِيthey boast، مِنْfrom ضِيَائِكِyour radiance تَنْهَمُthey feed greedily
And if I gave you the stars as a gift,
And if I gave you the stars as a gift
And they grew boastful, feasting on your radiance,
And they shone proudly in your light, sighing
وَلَوْand if كُنْتُI were أُهْدِيكِI offer you الْقَرِيضَverse مُمَدِّحًاlavishly praising
وَصَارَand began قَرِيضِيmy verse منfrom سِمَاتِكِyour qualities يَنْغَمُit sounds melodious
And if I offered you verse in lavish praise,
And if I gifted you poetry singing your praises
And my verse drew its music from your qualities,
My verses with your attributes ring
فَنَالَand won الرِّضَاapproval مَاwhat قَدْalready بَذَلْتُI offered لَسَرَّنِيit would surely gladden me
وَصِرْتُand I became عَلَىover التَّقْصِيرِthe shortcoming ذَاthis أَتَأَلَّمُI suffer
And what I had offered won approval, that would surely gladden me;
Gaining approval however much I gave would please me
And I would ache over this shortcoming.
Though I’m deficient, I remain pained
