Are those eyes, or stars from the sky?

When they gaze, the peril is that they speak.

Then my heart trembles at the sound of their yearning.

And the returning echo struck terror through my ribs and blood.

For at their first glance, my heart could not tell:

Had my darkness brightened, or had my daylight darkened?!

As though I were at sea, with no shores to be seen,

I journey on it—how can I anchor and be safe?

In their depths, secrets lie hidden like pearls,

And its waves call: 'Venture forth and win!'

And were I to dive into the depths, my heart trembling,

Would I gain pearls, or seal my own doom?

When they are closed, like the sun at its setting,

The world bids them farewell, while longing has grown.

But their two eyelids are like a cloud,

So you drink of warmth, and light smiles.

And when they return, they fill the universe with joy,

And their radiance shines from my heart to the sky.

So, woe is me! I have become the captive of a glance.

And can a drop quench the heart's thirst?

Yet I shall be content with moisture, for without it

There is ruin—so patience, for the hope is that they be generous.

And would that I knew: if I take more, what shall I see?

Relief from thirst—or thirst that terrifies me, leaving me regretful?

And I know that with every extra glance I take,

Thirst increases, and the heart will never learn.
