A young man's life, as long as he lives, is darkness,

Unless he lights it with the light of life,

    بِهِ يَهْتَدِي ثُمَّ يُحْيِي الرُّفَاتْ

    With knowledge, through which he becomes a nation;

Through it he finds his way, then brings crumbled bones to life.

For a young man's knowledge after ignorance is life,

And how wondrous is resurrection after death!

    فَكَمْ لَذَّةٍ نِلْتُ وَالنَّفَحَاتْ

    I have lived an age, seeking life;

How many pleasures and fragrant breezes I have enjoyed!

And many a night in bitter hardship,

And many a hard day passed, never to come again.

Whenever I learn something, it is as though I am

In a desert of pitch-black darkness,

And a star appears and lights the road.

And how these moments gladden a person!

Yet it is a joy like a mirage:

Then the road appears long and harsh,

And behind it, the paths multiply—

    Either thousands or hundreds.

Oh, if only I knew: is my knowledge growing,

Or does ignorance merely seem unchanging?

Yet I marveled at this road:

Its thorns hold the delight of desire.

And I have loved—and my love keeps growing—

A road where houris and ranks await.

So rise and dive, my brother, into the seas of knowledge,

And gather pearls, and forget deep slumber.

Adorn yourself with your pearls, if you gain them,

And be the owner of water in the desert wastes.

For this road is the road of life,

My brother, if you would live; otherwise, death.
