إِلَيكَto You إلهَO God العَرشِthe Throne أَشكُوI complain تَضَرُّعاًin humble supplication
وَأدعُوكَand I call upon You فيin الضَّرَّاءِadversity رَبِّيmy Lord لِتَسمَعَاso that You may hear
To You, God of the Throne, I bring my plaint in humble supplication.
To You, God of the Throne, I complain pleading
And I call upon You in adversity, my Lord, that You may hear.
And call upon You in hardship, my Lord, that You may listen
وَكَمand how many دَمَّرُواthey destroyed مِنof مَربَعa dwelling كَانَwas آهِلاًinhabited
فَقَدso indeed تَرَكُواthey left الدارَthe home الأَنِيسَةthe welcoming بَلقَعاa barren waste
How many inhabited dwellings they have destroyed!
How much they destroyed a populated city
They have left the welcoming home a barren waste.
They left the friendly home desolated
فَأَصبَحَتِso became الأَموَالُthe wealth فِيهمamong them نَهَائِباًplunder
وَأصبَحَتِand became الأَيتَامُthe orphans غَرثَىhungry وَجُوَّعَاand famished
So wealth became plunder among them,
So properties became among them prey
And the orphans became hungry and famished.
And orphans became disheveled and starved
وَفرَّand fled عَنِfrom الأَوطَانِthe homelands مَنthose who كَانَwas قَاطِناًresident
وفُرِّقَand was scattered إِلفٌa fellowship كَانضwas (apparent typo) مُجتَمِعاًgathered مَعَاtogether
And those who dwelt there fled their homelands,
And those who lived in homelands fled
And a fellowship once gathered together was scattered.
And fellowship that gathered together dispersed
مَضَواthey departed وانقَضَتand ended أيَّامُهُمtheir days حِينَwhen أَورَثُواthey bequeathed
ثَنَاءًpraise وذِكراًand remembrance طَيِّباًgood قَدindeed تَضَوَّعَاspread its fragrance
They passed on and their days ended, leaving behind
They passed away and their days ended when they inherited
Praise and a good remembrance whose fragrance has spread.
Praise and good memory that became well known
فَجازَاهُمso may He reward them اللهGod الكَرِيمُthe Generous بِفَضلِهِthrough His bounty
جِنَاناًgardens of Paradise ورَضواناًand divine pleasure منَfrom اللهGod أَرفَعَاloftier
So may God, the Generous, reward them through His bounty
So God, the Generous, rewarded them for their virtue
With gardens of Paradise and God's still loftier pleasure.
With gardens and pleasure from God most high
فَإنso if كَانَتِwere الأشبَاحُthe bodies مِنَّاof us تَبَاعَدَتgrew far apart
فَإنَّthen surely لأَروَاحِfor the souls المُحِبِّينَof those who love مَجمَعَاa meeting place
If our bodies have grown far apart,
And if spirits among us grew apart
Then surely the souls of those who love have a meeting place.
The souls of lovers still unite
عَسَىmay it be وَعَسَىand may it be أَنthat يُنصُرَgrant victory to اللهGod دِينَنَأour faith
وَيَجبُرَand mend مِنَّاwithin us كُلَّall مَاthat which قَدalready تَصَدَّعَاhas fractured
May it be, may it be, that God grants our faith victory,
Perhaps, perhaps God will help our religion
And mends all within us that has fractured,
And mend all that has cracked among us
وَيَعمُرَand rebuild لِلسَّمحَاfor the gracious faith رُبُوعاًdwellings تَهَدَّمَتwere ruined
وَيَفتَحَand open سُبلاpaths لِلهدايَةfor guidance مَهيَعَاwide and clear
And rebuilds for the gracious faith the dwellings that were ruined,
And rebuild ruins for the tolerant
And opens wide, clear paths to guidance,
And open ways to guidance that give access
وَيُظهِرَand make manifest نُورَthe light الحَقِّof truth يَعلُوrises ضِيَاءُهits radiance
فَيُضحِيso becomes ظَلاَمُthe darkness الشّركِof polytheism وَالشَّكِّand doubt مُقشِعَاdispelled
And makes the light of truth manifest, its radiance rising,
And show the light of truth, its glow ascending
So the darkness of polytheism and doubt is dispelled.
So the darkness of polytheism and doubt yield, dissipating
إلهِيmy God فَحَقِّقso fulfill ذاthis الرَّجَاءَthe hope وَكُنand be بِنَاtoward us
رَؤُوفاًcompassionate رَحِيماًmerciful مُستَجِيباًanswering لَنَاfor us الدُّعَاthe prayer
My God, fulfill this hope, and be toward us
My God, fulfill this hope and be with us
Compassionate and merciful, answering our prayer.
Compassionate, Merciful, answering our prayer
أَلاَtake heed أيُّهَاO الإِخوَانُbrothers صَبراًbe patient فَإنَّنيfor indeed I
أرىI consider الصبرpatience للمقدورwith what is decreed خيراًbetter وأنفعاand more beneficial
Take heed, brothers: be patient, for I
Oh brothers, patience, patience, for I see
Find patience with what is decreed better and more beneficial.
Patience for what is destined is best and most useful
وَلاَand do not تَيأسُواdespair مِنof كَشفِremoving مانابَwhat has befallen إنَّهُindeed it
إذَاwhen شَاءwills رَبِّيmy Lord كَشفَremoval ذَاكَthat تَمَزَّعَاit is torn apart
And do not despair of relief from what has befallen; surely,
And do not despair of relief from what has afflicted
When my Lord wills its removal, it is torn apart.
When my Lord wills it, He will remove what has torn
وَمَاand not قُلتُI said ذَاthis أشكُوI complain إِلَىto الخَلقَpeople نكبةًa calamity
وَلاَnor جَزَعاًout of dismay مِمَّاover what أصَابَbefell فَأفجَعَاand so caused grief
I have not said this to complain to people of a calamity,
I did not say this complaining to people of calamity
Nor in dismay over what befell and brought grief.
Or panicking at what has saddened and distressed
فماfor not كَانَoccurred هذاthis الأمرُaffair إلاَّexcept بِقُدرَةٍthrough a power
بِهَاby it قَهَرَsubdued اللهGod الخَلاَئِقَcreated beings أجمَعَاall
For this affair came about only through a power
For this matter was only by God's power
By which God has subdued all creation.
With which He subdued all creatures
وَذَالِكَand that عَنbecause of ذَنبٍsin وَعِصيَانِand disobedience to خَالِقٍthe Creator
أَخَذنَاHe chastised us بِهِfor it حِيناًat one time فَحِيناًthen at another لنرجعاso that we might return
And that arose from sin and disobedience to the Creator,
That was for a sin and disobeying the Creator
Who chastised us for it, time after time, so we might return.
Which He seized us for, time and again, that we may return
وَقَدand indeed آنَthe time has come أَنto نرجُوwe hope for رِضَاهُHis pleasure وعَفوَهُand His pardon
وأَنand to نَعرِفَwe recognize التَّقصِيرَthe failings مِنَّاon our part فَنُقلِعَاso we may desist
And now the time has come to hope for His pleasure and His pardon,
And it is time we hope for His approval and pardon
And recognize our failings, and so desist.
And recognize our shortcomings, that we may desist
فَيَاso O مُحسِناًBeneficent One قَدindeed كُنتَYou have been تُحسِنُbestowing goodness دَائِماًalways
وَيَاand O وَاسِعاًBoundless One قَدindeed كانَhas been عَفوُكَYour pardon أَوسَعَاvaster
O Beneficent One, You have always bestowed goodness,
O You who always did good, generously
And O Boundless One, Your pardon has been vaster still.
O You whose pardon was most ample
نَعُوذًwe seek refuge بِكَin You اللَّهُمَّO God مِنfrom سُوءِthe evil صُنعِنَاof our deeds
فَإنَّfor indeed لنَاwe have فيin العَفوِpardon مِنكَfrom You لَمطمَعَاsurely a hope
We seek refuge in You, O God, from the evil of our deeds.
We seek refuge in You, O God, from our misdeeds
For surely we have hope of pardon from You.
For in Your pardon we still have hope
أَغِثنَاhelp us أَغِثنَاhelp us وَادفَعِand ward off الشِّدَّةَthe hardship الَّتيthat

Help us, help us, and ward off the hardship that
Help us, help us, and repel the adversity that
Has struck and fallen upon us; remove the affliction and lift it away.
Has struck, and uncover the harm and lift it away
