For love, a ruin stands upon her sands.

Around it we weep, and celebrate.

The palm of longing etched it into our blood,

And the eyes folded it into our depths.

It is our enduring dream, and our temple,

And our prayer, and love, and love poetry.

For her sake, our affection grows pure,

And for love of her, we suffer and fight one another.

Our tragedies and our joy have grown gray,

And states have been torn apart along her path.

    And her lush youth—still

Its flowers glisten with dew and reach their fullness.

Sanaa, O song that spread its fragrance,

And eternity excelled in singing her.

If a storm drives me away from you,

And the paths between us diverge,

So I remain true to my love, and in shyness

My soul prays to your eyes.

I meet you triumphant and broken,

And on poetry's wing I journey.

Longing sweeps over me, and I am crushed

By longing; and in remembrance I burn.

No star passes across the horizon

Without my calling to it: When shall we arrive?

And when, upon two palms, in mercy,

Will this stranger far from home be borne?

    Nuqum—its beacons wave to me

Across the seas, and the flames beckon.

Indeed, to Sanaa I am carried

By the face of day, and the late afternoons depart.

And I become a child again whenever she is mentioned,

And the man vanishes amid my blaze.

So when will her minarets shade me,

And the mountain shine from her embrace?

    حانَ الرَّحيلُ، ونوَّرَ الأجلُ

    No room remains in the days;

Departure is at hand, and the appointed end has blossomed.

Shall I die, my Sanaa, far from home,

With neither tears nor kisses drawing me near?

I scatter the pages of my days,

And live with neither despair nor hope.

O our mother, our seasons have gone hungry,

And Yemen found her rains slow to come.

The flies devoured the embryo of her joy,

    And weakness assailed her cubs.

    She thought summer would bring

    Its rains, fertility, and milk.

But she—oh, the horror of what she witnessed!

Neither horses nor peaks could protect her.

She drowned in life's mire, and extinguished were

The shores and ships in her night.

And she surrendered to drought; neither Karib

Waters her seasons, nor does Yazan.

She feared death at Hasan's hands,

So Hasan killed her through her fear.

And by night she rebelled against an idol,

So an idol assassinated her at her dawn.

I weep for our days; gone are

Their longings, the dream, and the cities.

And my companions tell me: Enough sorrow.

What good are tears and sorrow?

Am I to be blamed, O mother, if it has dried—

My eye—and sorrow has borne fruit around it?

    في ليلةٍ وضّاحةٍ دفنوا

    I weep for young men whose deaths were grievous;

On a radiant night they were buried.

    أجفانُنا وقلوبُنا الكفنُ

    They departed without provisions, without a shroud;

Our eyelids and our hearts are the shroud.

I shall keep weeping for them, and they will be washed

Through exile, by my pouring tears,

Until the earth roars in revolt,

And the homeland cries out from her depths:

At your service, O Sanaa, we are here.

Neither death nor time can overtake us.

The knights of the age of the sun—still

Their banners draw near and come together.

Have you seen them? In the earth, from their blood,

There is fragrance, and in her eyelids, drowsiness.

And the oil brokers are crucified

By our hungry dreams, and debased.

They betrayed, so their trade yielded no profit,

And Aden walked over their torn limbs.

    ولكِ الخلودُ الخِصْبُ يا يَمَنُ.

    As for the traitors, fire reaps them;

And yours is fertile eternity, O Yemen.
