    In war, people are dead or wounded.

    They rush to it without a reason,

    as though they were firewood cast down for the fire.

    فَإِنْ تَجِدْ كَفَناً فَالأَثْلُ والشِّيحُ

    Their bodies lie naked upon the earth's breast;

    and if you find a shroud, it is tamarisk and wormwood.

    How long will the people forsake their own blood,

    with neither Jesus nor Noah coming to their aid?

    nor do invective and disparagement stir them.

    God's words have frozen in their mouths,

    and remembrance and praise have clouded over in their breasts.

    تَجَمَّدَت في المَحَارِيبِ التَّراويحُ

    God's mosques are silent in the hours before dawn;

    the Tarawih prayers have frozen in the prayer niches.

    The heart is rent with grief and broken,

    and the eye is tearful, and the soul wounded.

    The complicit victims—how vile the deeds they have committed!

    They are the prison cells within it, and the keys.

    What remains to them of themselves?! And they have

    in today's world neither pulse nor soul.

    In the age of terror, there have multiplied the gods of

    chaos, at random... so say to the wind: O wind!
