Shall I taste honey from your lips, my love?

A thousand million kisses no longer suffice.

I shall die of thirst if you do not show mercy

to a heart shattered by love for you, yet never reaching you.

You are life, its beauty and its joy.

And indeed, in my eyes, you are the Pleiades and Saturn.

O all my dreams, and the secret of my happiness,

in the sea, in the valley, on the mountain's summit.

I have never sailed the sea in its fury

except toward you—you are my sea and the sand.

And the shortened kāmil meter flourishes; when

I harnessed it to love for you, it shone and became complete.

With a mad glance, in haste,

you aimed an arrow into the heart, killing it.

Love was laid bare when I poured out my tears,

and tears expose whoever loves, throughout eternity.

You became my companion in my dream, and in my blood,

an ember that glowed with love and blazed.

I revered love's idol in your cheeks,

and saw how God worked wonders in the eyes.

Indeed, I slaughtered patience for you—and how often

love has burst forth when it lost hope!

If loving you is a misstep and a crime,

oh, how welcome those crimes and missteps!

Indeed, I am your captive, fasting or not.

I have told my family, and the last and the first.

What will be said if I grow drunk with longing

and become intoxicated? How sweet are longing and drunkenness!

So ask, for I have told my notebooks about you,

and the letters of my pens, and the League of States.

And I am about to cry out from every pulpit,

in my name and yours; I neither tire nor grow bored.

Tears choked me at parting from you,

and I began mingling elegy with love verse.

And I saw sheets of silk grow jealous of

your cheeks, while both eyes are slain by shyness.

So if you consent to an embrace, it is as though

you have relieved a sorrow whose weight I cannot bear.

And if you refuse, I may die, and you will regret it

forever—and yet after death there is no remedy.
