روحي، ويُشْعِلُ في العُرُوقِ لَهِيبا
A Damascene spell rends, within my blood,
A Damascene magic tears through my soul,
my soul, and kindles a blaze in my veins.
And kindles flames in my veins.

The wars of love have fallen asleep, except in Damas—
The battles of love have ceased, except in Damascus,

Where their blaze remains raging still.

I, O Damascus, am captive to your chains and to love.
Oh Damascus, I am captive to your bond,
Shall I die like al-Waddah, a stranger in you?
Shall I, like al-Waddah, die a stranger in your midst?
