You are above approval, and above questioning.
Stumble of a lifetime, be too great to be pardoned!

قَدindeed عََثَرناwe stumbled ، فَسَجِّليso record ياO لَياليnights !
Thus we are: we seethe with pride.
We have stumbled—record it, O nights!
لَمdid not تَسَلْناask us مَواقِفُoccasions العِزِّof honor يَوماever ً
أنُباليdo we care بالمَوتِabout death ، أمor لاnot نُباليwe care
The occasions of honor never once asked us
whether we cared about death or did not.
نَحنُwe قََومٌa people إذاwhen سَرَيناwe journey by night حَمَلناwe carry
مَوتَناour death قَبْلَbefore زادِناour provisions فيin الرِّحالthe saddlebags ِ!
We are a people who, when we journey by night, carry
our death before our provisions in the saddlebags!
وَعَلاand rose الصَّوتُthe voice..كانَwas صَوتَthe sound أذانof a call to prayer ٍ
يَشعَبُcleaves الرُّوحَthe soul مثلَlike صَوتِthe voice بِلالof Bilal ِ
And the voice rose—it was the sound of a call to prayer,
cleaving the soul like the voice of Bilal.

So we sprang up—Iraq was calling,
its wound immense, its majesty provoked.
لمdid not نَنَمْwe sleep فيin الجُحورِمثلَthe burrows, like السَّحاليthe lizards
بَلْrather مَشَيْناwe walked علىupon رؤوسthe summits ِالجِبالof the mountains ِ!
We did not sleep in burrows like lizards,
but walked upon the mountaintops!
وَهوَand it يَعلوrises.. ياO جَولَةbattle َالحَقِّfor truth نَذرٌa vow

And it rose—O battle for truth, a vow
for the corners of our children's eyes to be cleared!
وَعَثَرْناand we stumbled.. لِفَرْطِbecause of excessive نَخوَةِchivalry حاديناof our camel-driver

And we stumbled—from our camel-driver's excessive chivalry
and the treachery of paternal and maternal uncles.
قَدindeed عَثَرناwe stumbled .. فَسَجِّليso record ياO لَياليnights

We have stumbled—record it, O nights.
We stumbled into treachery, not in battle!
ثُمَّthen هاhere نَحنُwe ، والعراقُand Iraq يُعاصيdefies

Then here we are, while Iraq defies,
and the blood of resistance fighters gleams.

So let your traitors say, 'An awakening of death,'
and let them go mad from so much questioning!

Around our necks, pulsing with pride,
the agal's splendor has not fallen into the dust.

Tell those who wear it while it weeps:
May your women be bereaved of you—men that you are!
