This is your splendor, not mine,

and the radiance of your glory, not my radiance.

And it is your call that is heard in

all the worlds, not my call.

You are the one we hope in, O Iraq,

and you are the emblem of hope.

You are the afflicted one, O Iraq,

and you are the end of suffering.

    حاشاكَ مِن وَجَع ِالجَفاءِ

    You were never cold-hearted;

far be the hurt of coldness from you.

    بَل مَن تَغرَّبَ عنكَ نائي

    You were never distant;

rather, whoever goes into exile away from you is distant.

You are the one who fills the heart,

    ever pulsing there in secret.

We weep in silence in our places

of exile, yet no beholder sees you.

    God! O anguish of exile,

how translucent you grow with shame!

  10. *

    *

    *

    *

O you, O homeland of mutual compassion,

    of solidarity and purity,

    O you, rich in all

the heritage of love and brotherhood,

    O you, eternally rich

    in every form of prosperity,

how have you become a pauper,

    seeking refuge from desolation?

  15. *

    *

    *

    *

And for what sin, O Iraq,

were you sentenced to blood and misery?

And how long will you remain the most grief-stricken

    among those grieving over annihilation?

  18. *

    *

    *

    *

O lord of the Tigris and Euphrates,

I would give my life for your waters—what waters!

And I would die for your palms—too proud

    to kneel or bow!

And I would die for every drop of blood shed

upon you, O honor of blood.

    Your wounds remain, O Iraq,

the most precious medals of loyalty,

like the Milky Way in the sky,

shining to the very height of splendor,

because they touch the tears of

the All-Merciful with blood and prayer,

    because His throne is encircled,

in anguish, by the eyes of the innocent,

and because they add to life

    chivalry and purity.

And your great chivalrous spirit remains,

    O soil of the prophets,

a voice that shakes the earth, so perhaps

    the earth may feel shame

for the calamities its vilest wolves

    have brought upon you.

  30. *

    *

    *

    *

O my master, you are the saint,

and you are the land of saints,

from the dome of noble Najaf

    to the minarets of Karbala.

And if you are slaughtered, it is just as

    Husayn was slaughtered for his proud refusal;

and if you thirst, it is like him

    and all his thirsty kin.

    This sanctity—its purity

is an honor too exalted for weeping,

too exalted to be mourned—and can

the lamps of heaven be mourned?

    They and Iraq are twins

    in blood, heroism, and sacrifice.

You are rich in them, even if

you are exhausted by this wealth!

  39. *

    *

    *

    *

O my master, O light of my eye,

    O Iraq of the faithful,

    O cry of slaughtered thirst,

    that remains unquenched,

except by the blood in throats

    as it gurgles with air.

To you, O Iraq, I have vowed my

rhyme, and made my allegiance sincere.

To you alone, and to no other,

my loyalty binds me all my life.

You are the one who taught me

    not to betray, nor to act for show;

  46. *

    *

    *

    *

    أن لا أ ُجادِلَ كِبريائي

    not to demean my dignity,

    not to dispute my pride;

not to say, after I have refused,

'Tomorrow my proud refusal will embarrass me.'

For tomorrow shall have my proud triumph over

    my pain, and my friends' smiles;

and tomorrow shall have my noble fasting,

    if one day my bowl lies empty;

and tomorrow shall have the love

of Iraqis—O my sustenance and water!

And if I pass away, then the pride

of my children, and the tears of my kin.

  53. *

    *

    *

    *

An honor: that hardships do not

    bargain with me over my loyalty;

    شُّبُهاتُ يَوما ًفي رِدائي

    and that never do

    suspicions cling to my robe;

and that my features are filled

with my truthfulness, and my mouth with my prayer:

that hearts may meet in you,

even upon the stream of my blood.

My love lies before me, O Iraq,

and all my questions lie behind me!
