I could almost swear, my lord: were you to stand
in your grave now, the whole earth would tremble!

People would behold a giant, his lock of hair
wrapped in clouds and the blue vault of heaven!

He gazes at them, and in his eyes is forgiveness,
and a look filled with compassion and sorrow.

I nearly cried out, 'O...'—then my blood shuddered
at the awe of your name; the yāʾ and alif remained

upon my lips, both awestruck; and there began
the unveiling of your visage from al-Jawza's summit.

Yes, it is I, O saint; I am borne
to you by the Tigris, the marshes and the palm fronds.

I see to the reach of my eye and the height of my hand,
while you sip from the kingdom of God.

Behold your two eyes, and in the radiance of their light
I see God's most exalted bounds revealed:
الحبُّlove، والعَطفُand tenderness، والغفرانُand forgiveness، والرَّأَفُand compassion

love, tenderness, forgiveness and compassion,
and a gleam that flashes past like the dart of lightning.

that your tears are precious, O proud one.

O my lord, oppression and arrogance have roared among us.

And after those summits and that glory, our nation
has come to be swept into the lowest abysses of humiliation.

for ninety-odd months, shedding blood,
each above his own grave—never to turn away.
فَقَبرُهُfor his grave كانَwas مِعياراa measure ً لِغَيرَتِهِof his zeal
لاnot كاليَلُوحُونَlike those who appear أحياءًalive وَهُمand they are جِيَفُcarrion
For his grave was the measure of his zeal,
not like those who appear alive yet are carrion.
اللهَO God .. لَوif only أنَّthat أهليmy people أنصَفُواhad done justice to دَمَهُمtheir blood

O God, if only my people had done justice to their blood!
But my people, in their extreme humiliation, did it no justice.
بَلrather سَوَّغُواthey condoned كلَّall ماthat which يَندىgrows moist الجَبينُthe brow لَهُbecause of it

حتىuntil لقدindeed ماتَdied فيناamong us الصِّدقُtruthfulness والشَّرَفُand honor!
Rather, they condoned all that makes the brow sweat with shame,
until truthfulness and honor had indeed died among us!

As for those whose horses raided for a time,
but who charged against their own people and never desisted,
كانُواthey were جَبابِرَةَtyrants الدُّنياthe world بماthrough what هَتَكواthey violated

they were the world's tyrants through the outrages they wrought,
and their people dragged their chains in the abysses of their oppression.
