Fearing for your heart, pierced by my pain,

I shall now close my pages over my pen.

In you I unfurled my whole life as a flag.

Now grant me a hand with which to fold my flag!

How often I dreamed of a death in you, in which I would be borne

by a clamor of lights and darkness.

My family, my friends, and my poems, scattered

over the funeral as voices without words,

except "Iraq," calling me—and here I am,

waking from my dream in the earth's remotest reaches.

So I see people—not my family, nor my language—

and I see the soul, with a jagged rift within it.

I die among you, even if my lung is severed.

O you who blame me over the Iraqis—do not blame me!
