Your brothers came to me with news of you,

    yesterday, offering congratulations.

They congratulated me because you had begun

    to compose poetry in meter.

So I did not believe them, out of

joy at what they were saying,

until they revealed to me that

they were jesting in their talk.

You did not come so that I might reveal

what lay hidden in your mind.

And why did you let them

laugh at us and make us weep?

And it was always from us

that the jesting came—not at our expense.

    So consult me, as

    strangers do.

Whenever you compose a poem, do not

    make its span any less;

and record it at the approach

    of eighty-five.

And I was told you had been reviled,

    so I have become sorrowful

for our reputations, which have ended up

    among people who revile us.

    When the sane begin

    to follow the madmen,

    they lack no surplus

of deficiency with which to console us,

so that you may reach what they have already

reached, and thus they may equal us.
