You singled me out, while I see the lovers as peers,

excluding me; thus you gave me a standing apart from theirs.

All of us are lovesick for you; so consider kindly

what lies between us, and grant union to the worthiest of us.

And I asked you for a favor, knowing

that the request would meet with denial from you,

so people might know that I had offered for it

my face to you—but its doom had come.

She said, “Have you forgotten what you did to us?

Remember—not all this from you can be forgetfulness—

    ما كنتَ تَعرِفُها إلا بِشَكوانا

    the days when you were free of our passionate love;

you knew of it only through our complaints.

You amused yourself and played, while longing tormented

us for you; and you grew proud when you met us.

So endure your own former ways.” I said to her,

“Do not mention what has passed; begin anew now.”

And I said, “Lord, grant me what You granted her:

You gave her forgetfulness after that love.”

And a spinster among the daughters of Rum, displaying

the vineyards’ daughter in different varieties to buyers—

I sent my companion to her ahead of me, for fear

that she might bring out a measure and a balance.

    وكلُّ شيءٍ إذا هَوَّنتَه هانا

    At last, after long and frequent visits, I grew used to both;

and everything grows easy when you make light of it.

I visit her with gallant companions; whenever

my soul resolves on the matter, they assist me in it.

And whenever I am cut off from visiting her

by hindrances my days bring, I visit Dimyan,

for the customary bounty of his hands, which I know

when I seek refuge in those hands from time to time.

They are the two that, when Time departs with what

I love, compensate me with ages in its place.

He has resolve raised beyond us, and a nature

generous; whenever we approach him, he draws us close.

We offer him praise in words, and he supports it

by providing proof for it through deeds.

How many a house of glory he has built with bounty! Thus

the verses of my poetry became pillars of that house.

And everyone whose ears those verses reached said,

when he saw a marvel that bewitched the people:

“How is it possible, though they stand rooted like mountains,

for reciters to carry them, afoot and mounted?”

O you who mention what may come tomorrow

of his bounty, while forgetting what has already been,

and display anger at calamities—you have indeed

appeased with it those among us who were angry.

I have expected kindness from you, and have no such hopes

of anyone else—I have put them to the test.
