You hid your resolve to part, yet it did not stay hidden,
You hid your resolve to part, though all was plain,
out of concern for the heart of the tormented, gravely lovesick one.
Wary for the heart of the slanderer keen.

Until, when his eyelids learned of it,
Until when your eyes knew this, the tears revealed
they revealed in a flood of tears what had not been revealed.
What had not been revealed in torrents clean.
لاdo not تحتَسِبexpect تَلقىto receive لبينِكَfor your parting منَّةًa favor
قَدalready كانَwas بَينكَyour parting قبلbefore هجرِكَyour abandonment مُتلفِيmy destroyer
Do not expect to win credit for your parting;
Do not reckon you will find, when we part, favour.
your parting had been my undoing even before you forsook me.
Of old, before we parted, we were serene.
عاهَدتَنيyou pledged to me لاmay you not خنتَنيbetray me فكأنَّماso it is as though
عاهَدتَنيyou pledged to me فيin العَهدِthe pledge إِنَّكَthat you لاwould not تَفِيkeep faith
You pledged to me—may you never betray me!—yet it was as though
You swore to me - no, you betrayed me, as if
you pledged to me, in that very pledge, that you would not keep faith.
You had sworn, in swearing, you would not be keen.

His glances said to his cheek, which had
She said to her spy, when she was resolved
resolved to aid me, the words of a fair-minded man:
To take my part by a speech fair and sheen:
الآنَnow قُمتِyou have come forward بِنَصرِهto help him ولَطالَماand so often
أضعَفتِyou weakened قوَّتَهhis strength بوَردٍwith a rose مُضعَفِdoubled
"Now you have come to his aid, though so often
"Now you have championed him, but for long you've
you weakened his strength with a doubled rose."
Sapped his strength by a greeting routine.
وأمرُّand I pass بِالمَغنىby the dwelling لحاجَةon an errand مُسرعٍof one in haste
فَيَكونُand then becomes ذكرُthe memory قَطينهof its dweller مُستَوقِفيwhat stops me
And I pass the dwelling on a hurried man's errand,
The minstrel moves me. I have pressing need,
then the memory of its dweller brings me to a halt.
So his lament for the wild cows will convene.

O longing, unjust reproach has made you arbiter—so pass judgment!
Passion! Your reason has judged; accept its rule.
O sickness, grief has given you free rein—so do as you will!
Pain! Fortune has turned you. Oh, turn serene."
