While he is said to be staying, word comes that he has gone—
It is said he has departed though resided here
the way of a miserly woman whose home you cannot find.
The miser’s deeds we know not her abode

Her dwellings have come to speak of stinginess,
She told of stinginess wherever she settled
shunning the caravan—guests and visitors alike.
Shunning guests and visitors on the road
نَشقىwe suffer بهاbecause of her وهيwhile she تَشقىsuffers فيin تَنقُّلهاher wandering

We suffer because of her, while she suffers in her wanderings.
We suffered with her as she wandered restless
She has indeed endured hardship in order to inflict harm.
Indeed I suffered much harm and woe

We have cost you no provisions, that you should withhold
Never did we see you offer provisions
hospitality; it is only eyes you entertain—
Only gazing from towns as you rode

of every man whose eyelids burn, whom you would think,
To each tearful mournful eye you seem
when his eye weeps water, to be weeping fire.
As tears of water though tears of fire flow
حَكىresembled السَّحائبthe clouds سحاحاًin downpour لبعدِكمُbecause of your distance

He has matched the clouds in downpour because you are far away;
Clouds related yearning in your absence
yes, and the dusky sandgrouse matches him in wakefulness.
Yes, and the little birds chirped at dawn’s glow
وماand not أراكمُI see you توجَّعتُمyou felt distress لصاحِبكمfor your companion
ولاnor عَرفتُمyou recognized لماof what يلقاهُhe endures it مِقداراa measure
And I see no sign that you have grieved for your companion,
You cared not for your companion or his fate
nor recognized the measure of what he endures.
Nor knew what destiny held in store
وأهيَفٍand a slender-waisted one باتَتhave come to اللوعاتُthe pangs of anguish تُعجبُهdelight him
منِّيfrom me ولاand not سيَّماthe like إنif كنَّthey were أسراراsecrets
And a slender-waisted one has come to delight in the pangs
My sorrows through the night did please him
I bear—especially when they remain secret.
Except my calls and protests evermore
وإنَّand indeed دَمعيmy tears ليرضينيtruly please me غداةَon the morning when أبىrefused
إلاexcept نِداءًa proclamation علىconcerning حاليmy plight وإشهاراand public disclosure
And my tears indeed please me: that morning they would do nothing
A free spirit, if not for its honor
but proclaim my plight and make it known.
Would have cried in public without reserve
وهمَّةٍand an ambition حُرَّةٍfree لولاwere it not for تشرُّفهاits longing
يوماًone day إلىtoward أنthat تَرىit might see فيamong الناسِpeople أحراراnoble men
And an ambition would be free, were it not for its longing
Time has judged them and warned the hopeful
one day to see noble men among mankind—
Of those who status and curtains preserve
وقدand already نعَتهُمannounced their deaths تصاريفُvicissitudes الزمانِof time لهاto it
وصارَand became ذلكthat للراجينَfor those who hoped إنذاراa warning
though time's vicissitudes had announced their deaths to it,
The noble were unequal so did not emerge
and that had become a warning to those who hoped.
After adopting curtains and veils galore
ولمand not يَكنthere was للعُلىfor Glory كفوٌa worthy match فماso not بَرَزتshe emerged
منfrom بعدِafter ماthat اتَّخذَتshe took حُجباًveils وأستاراand curtains
And Glory had no worthy match, so she did not emerge
Ali built with his virtues a home and cave
after taking veils and curtains.
And the best of men are those who live poor
بنىbuilt عليٌّAli علَيهاover her منfrom مكارِمهhis noble deeds
بَيتاًa house وغارَand felt protective jealousy وخيرُand the best الناسof people مَنwhoever غاراfelt protective jealousy
Ali built over her, from his noble deeds,
Who argues with him in times of crisis
a house, and guarded her jealously; the best of men are jealous guardians.
When following divinely inspired lore?
وهلand can يُنازعُهrival him فيin أزمةٍa crisis أحدٌanyone
إذاwhen اقتَفىhe followed مُلهَماًMulham فيهاin it وديناراand Dinar
And can anyone rival him in a crisis,
They gave freely like pouring clouds raining
when he follows Mulham and Dinar through it?
And he gave freely like floods evermore
جادواthey gave generously وكاناand the two were سَحاباًa cloud عمَّreached all وابلُهits downpour
وجادَand gave generously هذاthis one وكانand was السَّيلَthe flood جَراراsweeping
They gave freely; those two were a cloud whose downpour reached all,
The son of clouds, we know the floods are his
and this one gave freely, and was a sweeping flood.
Evidence stands for those doubting before
كذلكَlikewise ابنُthe son السحابِof the clouds السيلُthe flood نعرفُهُwe know it
قامَstood الدليلُthe proof علىagainst مَنwhoever شكَّdoubted أوor ماراdisputed
Thus we know the flood as the son of the clouds;
His enemies panic and flee in dread
the proof stands against whoever doubted or disputed.
Bearing loot which they thought secure
أعداءُthe foes أعدائِهof his enemies فيamid الرَّوعterror ماwhat حملواthey carried
منof القَناspears حينَwhen ظَنُّوهنَّthey thought them أَنصاراallies
His enemies' foes amid terror are what they carried
Only to forage lives when he scatters them
of spears, when they thought them allies.
And fill their property greedy and sure
لاnot يَفزعونَthey rush to arms عليهagainst him حينَwhen يُفزِعُهمhe terrifies them
إلاexcept ليستاقَso he may drive off فيamong الأموالِwealth أعماراlives
They do not rally against him when he terrifies them,
Deeds that dazzle minds beyond any verse
except for him to herd off lives along with wealth.
That has humbled the finest speeches and more
مناقبٌvirtues تبهرُoverwhelms الأقوالَwords عدَّتهاtheir number
قدindeed أعجزَتhave defeated خُطباًorations منهاabout them وأَشعاراand poems
Virtues whose number overwhelms words
You filled our souls with deeds and eyes with grace
have left orations and poems about them powerless.
And filled books entirely with tales of yore
ملأتَyou filled أنفسَناour souls فِعلاًwith deeds وأعيُنناand our eyes

You filled our souls with deeds, and our eyes
The caravans hear daily in their travels
with their beauty, and filled the books with accounts.
Only talk of you circulated afar
لاnot يسمعُhears الركبُthe travelers يوماًever فيin دنوِّهُمtheir nearness

The travelers never hear, whether they are near
or far, anything but far-ranging talk of you.
