Were you to undertake describing yourself—and a man

is better able to describe himself—

especially you, when from your speech wells

sweet water, and you strike fire,

and you exercise thought swift to gather

    meanings, and an ever-active mind,

you would, in what you did, O son of Saʿid,

leave out more than you included, for brevity.

Then you made my poetry powerless to describe your qualities—

and do they not render poems powerless?

So when you command me to gather jewels,

be patient until I dive into the seas.
