هذا وكم مُتَرشِّحٍ

لي مرةً من بعدِ أُخرى

لي مرةً من بعدِ أُخرى

This—and how many an aspirant

And how often one

has sought me, time after time!

Comes to me time after time

أجرَتهُ رغبتُهُ وزُه

أجرَتهُ رغبتُهُ وزُه

دي في المدائِح كلَّ مُجرى

دي في المدائِح كلَّ مُجرى

His eagerness and my indifference

His desire and flooding passion

to panegyrics drove him down every path,

Channel him into praising me through every path

حتَّى إذا اتَّصَلَت رَسا

حتَّى إذا اتَّصَلَت رَسا

ئِلُه مع الركبانِ تَترى

ئِلُه مع الركبانِ تَترى

until, when his letters kept arriving

Until when his messages connect

with the riders, one after another,

With the caravans repeatedly

نكَّبتُ عَنه جانِباً

نكَّبتُ عَنه جانِباً

وتركتُ عَين الجود عَبرى

وتركتُ عَين الجود عَبرى

I turned aside from him

I turn away from him

and left generosity's eye tearful.

And leave the eye of generosity crying

ولقد رأيتُكَ بالذي اس

ولقد رأيتُكَ بالذي اس

تَدعى وما استدعيت أُخرى

تَدعى وما استدعيت أُخرى

And indeed I saw you with what he

And I have seen you with what was

requested; you requested no other,

Requested and not requested by another

حتى نشأتَ لها ونف

حتى نشأتَ لها ونف

سُك من هواها بعد سَكرى

سُك من هواها بعد سَكرى

until you arose for her, while your soul

Until you grew for it and your

was still drunk with love for her.

Soul from its love after intoxication

فانظُر هل اتَّفق اختِيا

فانظُر هل اتَّفق اختِيا

ري واختيارُك يا ابن كرى

ري واختيارُك يا ابن كرى

So see whether my choice

So look - has my choice

and yours have coincided, O Ibn Karā.

And your choice coincided, O son of Kura
