They appeared, till they passed a glance over my heart,

and hid themselves in clouds of face veils.

    Working wine's effect—and how far

apart in subtlety are a glance and a draught!

Leaving me to ask people about

what they know of astrology and medicine,

seeking signs of the outcome of my affairs,

seeking help from whoever treats my anguish,

seeking refuge from passion through incantations,

clinging to every man of books.

So if the amulets are for love,

when he completes them, my love is complete.

Then look, you two, at the house of my infatuation: can you discern

a path from it to the house of my reproach?

And give me wine, red as fire, in what is

white as blossoms, both solid substance and poured liquid.

And when you two mix it, beware of it,

for it flings shooting stars from its bubbles.

And know it is the bay-colored wine that outruns

my grief, not the lean-bellied bay horse.

And make what you two sing to me today

a tale of al-Husayn ibn Wahb:

how he summons bounty and is summoned to it,

so his call is answered, and he answers.

He defies the saying, yet grows ever more beloved—

a visitor from his bounty who never spaces his visits.

What a character, finding every easy thing hard,

beneath a resolve that finds every hard thing easy!

And noble attainments lie between deed and word,

ranging from the unwelcome to the cherished.

You fell in love with noble deeds, and they fell in love

with you; how often you keep yearning and inspiring yearning!

    ليس تخفى مداعبات المحبِّ

    Time meant no harm by your departure;

the lover's playful teasing is not hidden.

How many loved ones have time's vicissitudes turned me

away from, yet my heart has not turned!

O Abu Talib, take love in exchange for love,

and give me something extra, for I now charge interest.

I give you nothing beyond your own

excellence; would that I reached it—that would suffice me.
