ماnot كلُّevery عَينٍeye لهاit has عَينٌan eye تُسهِّدُهاkeeps it sleepless
The carefree slept around me, and I said to them:
The carefree slept around me, so I said to them:
Not every eye has another eye to keep it awake.
Not every eye has an eye that keeps it sleepless.
لاdo not تُنكِرواfind strange عُقلَتيmy captivity عامَينِtwo years فيin يَدِهِhis hand
فإنَّfor indeed صَيداءَSidon مَعروفٌwell known تَصيُّدُهاher ensnaring
Do not reproach my two-year captivity in his hand;
Do not wonder at my two years of captivity in his hand;
for an experienced hunter was the one who ensnared it.
for Sidon's ensnaring is well known.
كأنَّماas though أهلُهاher people أهلُfamily المُقِيمthe resident بهاin her

It is as though her people were the people of the one who dwells within her—
As though her people were family to whoever dwells there;
such indifference to homelands is what carries her far away.
and such indifference to homelands keeps them far away.
