قِف فتبين عَلى احتيازي

سَرائِراً قطُّ لم أبِنها

سَرائِراً قطُّ لم أبِنها

Stop and discern, despite my reserve,

Stop, so you may see my precautions,

secrets I have never revealed.

ذاتُ دَلالٍ تَعلَّقَتني

ذاتُ دَلالٍ تَعلَّقَتني

فَخوَّنَتني ولم أخُنها

فَخوَّنَتني ولم أخُنها

A woman of coy charm grew attached to me,

An essence that has captivated me,

then accused me of betrayal, though I had not betrayed her.

Then betrayed me, while I stayed true.

لا يَعرفُ الواصِفُونَ حَدّاً

لا يَعرفُ الواصِفُونَ حَدّاً

لهَا ولا يُدركُونَ كُنها

لهَا ولا يُدركُونَ كُنها

Those who describe her know no limit

Describers do not know an end,

to her, nor can they fathom her essence.

To it, nor can they grasp its essence.

قالَت لأخرَى أما تَرَيهِ

قالَت لأخرَى أما تَرَيهِ

يأمُر أبصارَنا ويَنهَى

يأمُر أبصارَنا ويَنهَى

She said to another woman, “Do you not see him

commanding our eyes and forbidding them?

Command our sights and forbid?

إذا رَأى مُقلةً لَجُوجاً

إذا رَأى مُقلةً لَجُوجاً

وسامَها الغضَّ غضَّ عَنها

When he sees an insistent eye

When he sees a frowning moon,

and bids it lower its gaze, he looks away from it.

Adorned with a frown, he turns from it.

كم عَبراتٍ جَرَت عَليهِ

كم عَبراتٍ جَرَت عَليهِ

في وجناتٍ أرقَّ مِنها

في وجناتٍ أرقَّ مِنها

How many tears have flowed for him

How many tears have flowed from him

down cheeks more delicate than those tears!

On cheeks softer than them.

وسَوفَ تَلقَى القلُوب جَهداً

وسَوفَ تَلقَى القلُوب جَهداً

مِنه إن اللَّه لم يُعِنها

مِنه إن اللَّه لم يُعِنها

And hearts will suffer hardship

And hearts will still suffer hardship from him

from him, if God does not help them.”
