يا أيُّها البَحرُ جارُ البَحرِ بَينَكُما

يا أيُّها البَحرُ جارُ البَحرِ بَينَكُما

مُجاوِرٌ ثالِثٌ ما مَسَّهُ بَلَلُ

مُجاوِرٌ ثالِثٌ ما مَسَّهُ بَلَلُ

O sea, neighbor of the sea, between you two

Dwells a third neighbor whom no moisture has touched.

مكانُه مِنكُما يَبسٌ وَقَد شَرِقَت

مكانُه مِنكُما يَبسٌ وَقَد شَرِقَت

بِالماءِ مِن حَولِه الأَوهادُ والقُللُ

بِالماءِ مِن حَولِه الأَوهادُ والقُللُ

His place beside you both is dry, though

The hollows and peaks around him are choked with water.

وَطالَ يا ابنَ عَلِيٍّ مِنكَ ذا شُغلٍ

وَطالَ يا ابنَ عَلِيٍّ مِنكَ ذا شُغلٍ

عَنهُ فَهَل لَكَ فيهِ مَرَّةً شُغلُ

عَنهُ فَهَل لَكَ فيهِ مَرَّةً شُغلُ

And long, O son of Ali, have other concerns kept you

From him; will you ever give him your attention?

قَد كانَ قَبلكَ فَعَّالونَ قلتُ لَهم

قَد كانَ قَبلكَ فَعَّالونَ قلتُ لَهم

فَزادَ ما قُلته في قَدر ما فَعَلوا

فَزادَ ما قُلته في قَدر ما فَعَلوا

Before you were men of great deeds, whom I addressed;

So what I said increased the worth of what they did.

وَأنتَ أَوَّلهم مَجداً وَإن سَبَقُوا

وَأنتَ أَوَّلهم مَجداً وَإن سَبَقُوا

وَربَّ مجدٍ بِهِ يَستَأخِرُ الأولُ

وَربَّ مجدٍ بِهِ يَستَأخِرُ الأولُ

And you are foremost among them in glory, though they preceded you;

And many a glory makes the first fall behind.
