أبا الحُسينِ الفَضلُ في أهلِهِ

أبا الحُسينِ الفَضلُ في أهلِهِ

وَكانَ لَولاكَ بِلا أَهلِ

وَكانَ لَولاكَ بِلا أَهلِ

O Abu al-Husayn, excellence is among its own people;

The merit is due to al-Husayn's family

And, but for you, it would have no kin.

And were it not for you, they would have no family

فَما لِهَذا الدَّهرِ لا تَعتَدي

فَما لِهَذا الدَّهرِ لا تَعتَدي

صُروفُهُ إِلا عَلَى مِثلي

صُروفُهُ إِلا عَلَى مِثلي

So what ails this age, that none are assailed

So why does time not cease its tyranny against me

By its vicissitudes except the likes of me?

Its calamities fall only on the likes of me

ما بَرِحَت عَنِّي تَباريحُهُ

ما بَرِحَت عَنِّي تَباريحُهُ

حتَّى تَسوَّقتُ منَ الرَّحلِ

حتَّى تَسوَّقتُ منَ الرَّحلِ

Its torments did not leave me

Its afflictions never left me

Until I sold some of my belongings at market.

Until I was driven from camp to camp
