Night and day stood still, though night used

    to flee whenever day came.

    لا ولا ثمَّ قوَّةٌ فيكرُّ

    It contemplates no retreat that would earn it disgrace;

no, nor is there strength for it to charge again.

Where is the dominion of your two eyes over us?

Tell it: magic is not permitted in love.

You scattered the fire of your cheek until

every lovesick heart held embers of it.

With what, then, will you cast off your two sideburns? Tell me—

    especially if hair overtakes hair.

And it pains me that, in war

and in peace, you remain inexperienced throughout your life.
