وأغنَّ أغيدَ ودُّهُ

وأغنَّ أغيدَ ودُّهُ

مُستَأنِسٌ بي وَهو نافِر

مُستَأنِسٌ بي وَهو نافِر

Many a sweet-voiced, graceful youth—his affection

And a sweetly nasal-voiced, graceful youth—his affection

Is intimate with me, though he himself shies away.

is at ease with me, though he shies away.

إن قلتُ زُرني قالَ نَم

إن قلتُ زُرني قالَ نَم

فَالطيفُ ليسَ يَزُورُ ساهِر

فَالطيفُ ليسَ يَزُورُ ساهِر

If I say, “Visit me,” he says, “Sleep—

If I say, 'Visit me,' he says, 'Sleep,'

For a dream-phantom never visits one who lies awake.”

for the dream-phantom does not visit one who is awake.

ويَقولُ لي فِيما يَقُو

ويَقولُ لي فِيما يَقُو

لُ نَعَم وما لِلقَولِ آخِر

لُ نَعَم وما لِلقَولِ آخِر

And amid all the things he says to me,

And he says to me, among the things he says,

He says, “Yes—but there is no final word

'Yes'—but his words do not end

حتَّى أشاوِرَ قلتُ

حتَّى أشاوِرَ قلتُ

لكنّي هَويتُ ولم أشاوِر

لكنّي هَويتُ ولم أشاوِر

Until I take counsel.” I reply,

until 'Let me consult.' I said:

“Yet I fell in love without consulting anyone.”

'But I fell in love and did not consult.'
